WHO WE ARE

John Bero_Sitting on Column Capital_1989.jpg

Bero Architecture is a company of dedicated designers and historians committed to conscientiously improving upon and documenting the built environment through our technical expertise and collaboration with our clients and the broader community.

We are a passionate and capable team of professionals who provide full Architecture, Preservation Planning, Building Evaluation, and Interior Design services in our nuanced approach to Historic Preservation practice. We work closely with our clients and their communities to carefully shape and inform their vision through research, documentation, and thoughtful study of potential design solutions.

Founded by John Bero in 1976 with a small team of architects and a vision to carefully rehabilitate buildings through an in-depth understanding of their historical context and physical evolution; we have expanded and carried on John’s original vision fostering decades-long relationships with clients, community organizations, and colleagues to ensure meaningful and lasting stewardship of our community’s collective history.

Our work is driven by curiosity and creativity while ensuring sympathetic reuse and appropriate care so we can leave the best of our cultural heritage to future generations.

“Preservation should be understood as a way to sympathetically and intelligently adapt to our changing world of architecture, it should not be used as a means to halt or stifle progress blindly.”

— John Bero, Founder

IN THE NEWS

The Architecture of Thomas W. Boyde Jr.

Our project team’s ongoing work documenting and celebrating the life, career, and accomplishments of Mr. Boyde was recently highlighted in a feature article by community newspaper, Westside News. Earlier in 2023, we collaborated on a gallery exhibit and symposium in partnership with Syracuse University’s School of Architecture and the Boyde Family. Our public lectures continue, most recently occurring at the 2023 annual meeting of Historic Brighton.

Bruce C Bates Colonnade Rehabilitation

Traditional Building Magazine featured our detailed and careful rehabilitation and partial reconstruction of George Eastman Museum’s colonnade as a fully-enclosed, environmentally-controlled, and visually-open space in their December 2023 issue.

Willard Campus Highest and Best Use Study

Our work serving as the historic preservation consultant for the project team led by MRB Group has recently been completed after months of study and public meetings. We look forward to future investment and redevelopment at the historic Willard State Hospital complex.
