THOUGHTS ON PRESERVATION FUNDINGFunding for preservation work is available from several sources and for many different kinds of work. This document presents a list of organizations and funding programs, gives contact information and application deadlines. We try to keep these as current as possible, but you should contact the appropriate people to verify deadlines and grant amounts. THOUGHTS ON HIRING AN ARCHITECTWe think it is a good idea to interview several architects (at least two; three is better) before hiring one. Ask for references. Discuss scope of services, fees, schedule, organization, and philosophy... THOUGHTS ON CHOOSING A CONTRACTORWe are often asked how to find and select a contractor to repair, restore, remodel, and/or build additions or homes. We are glad to hand out lists from our contractors file with certain precautions... THOUGHTS ON BUILDING SURVEYSOwners
want to know how to take care of their buildings. We are often asked to
survey buildings and make recommendations regarding maintenance and
repair. There are many different levels of studies available, depending
on the need of the building, the needs of the owners, and the funds
available. THOUGHTS ON OFFICIAL RECOGNITION OF LANDMARKSThe
National Register of Historic Places is the list of the nation's
properties officially designated as worthy of preservation, including
archaeological or historical sites, districts, buildings, and objects
that: THOUGHTS ON CHURCH ACCESSIBILITYThe Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law and, while existing facilities owned by religious organizations are exempt, many congregations want to comply with the law (If the building is being altered, the area being modified must be made accessible under the New York State Building Code)... Preservation
Briefs
is a series of technical guidelines for people who maintain historic
buildings. Each brief is full of detailed preservation information on
topics ranging from masonry repair to window reconditioning. The Preservation
Briefs are prepared by the Preservation Assistance Division
of the U.S. National Park Service... THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR'S 'STANDARDS FOR REHABILITATION' The Secretary of the Interior, which is headed under the National Park Service, outlines ten guidelines or standards for Rehabilitation. To be eligible for federal tax incentives, a rehabilitation project must meet all ten Standards... FEDERAL TAX CREDITS FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATIONThe federal government encourages the preservation of historic buildings. Income tax credits, deductions for charitable contributions of partial interests in historic properties, and investment tax credits for low income properties are all discussed at the National Park Service website... SHARED MUNICIPAL SERVICES INCENTIVE GRANTNew
York State Department of State (NYSDOS) offers grants that help
municipalities cover the cost of, among other things, feasibility
studies and capital improvements. The program is geared toward the
needs of local government to share services with other municipalities.
Information about the program can be found at the NYSDOS website and at the NYSDOS Localities and School Districts
site. MORE THOUGHTS...References for Church Preservation
