Chenango County Historical Society

Norwich, NY.  In 2003, Bero Architecture provided a preliminary overview and pictorial renderings of potential additions to the Society’s late nineteenth century school, which houses and displays the collection. In 2004, we provided programming services, made measured drawings of the existing building, and developed a schematic design and estimate for expansion.

Clark House Museum

Chicago, IL.  Building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 1990. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

Dorflinger Museum

White Mills, PA.  Building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 1994. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

Erie County Historical Society & Museum

Essex County Historical Society

Elizabethtown, NY.  Accessibility study and general building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 2002. This study was jointly funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation. In In 2005 we completed contract documents for an elevator and other accessibility provisions; that work is now under construction.

Foster Cottage

Clifton Springs, NY.  In 1995 Bero Architecture designed the restoration of this nineteenth-century Gothic Revival house for use as a house museum. The main wing of the house was adapted for use a local history museum.

Frederick Douglass Museum & Cultural Center Foundation, Inc.

Rochester, NY.  In 1995 we did a NYSCA funded study of an existing building proposed for the use of The Frederick Douglass Museum & Cultural Center Foundation, Inc.; and multiple consultations as the museum continued to search for a home.

Genesee Country Village and Museum

Mumford, NY.  This living history museum consists of 68 restored buildings. Since 2001 Bero Architecture has provided advice regarding general preservation techniques as well as specific consultations regarding the Opera House, Tompkins Barn, the P&L Railroad Station, and the Campbell House.  In 2012 exterior and interior renovations were completed at the Wehle Gallery.  Work included a new entrance, conversion of two galleries into state of the art collections storage, all new finishes and display space in the remaining galleries, and a complete modernization of all utilities and lighting.

George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film

Rochester, NY.  Since 1984, restoration of the principle rooms, restoration of various landscape structures etc. Ongoing consultations. This building is a National Historic Landmark.

Graycliff

Evans, NY.  In 1999 Bero Architecture wrote the Historic Structures report for this important Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home southwest of Buffalo, NY. In 2003 Bero Architecture updated the 1999 conservation recommendations in a report which was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

The Granger Homestead Society, Inc.

Canandaigua, NY.  Since 1986, multiple consultations including handicapped access, building evaluation, barn evaluation, and other projects. In 2002 we completed a NYSCA-APD funded study of site and building needs to accommodate expanding carriage collection. Also in 2002, we were the architects for flat-seam metal roof restoration, and this year we have been consulting on repairs to the barrel-vault roof of a unique coal-gas production building.

Hamilton House

Lockport, NY.  Since 2002 Bero Architecture has assisted with plans to adapt this simple, early nineteenth century stone church for use as a small local history museum near the historic “five steps” locks of the Erie Canal.

Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company

Lyons, New York.  In the late nineteenth century, 75% of the land in Wayne County was dedicated to growing mint. In 2002 Bero Architecture did an Historic Structures report on the home of the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company, where oil was produced which won international prizes. The County plans to use the building for a museum recognizing the local importance of the industry.

Washington, DC. Field reviews in 1995 and 1999 of grant applicants for the Conservation Project Support program of Heritage Preservation.

Landmark Society of Western New York

Rochester, NY.  Since 1982 multiple consultations regarding the Stone-Tolan House Museum and the Campbell-Whittelsey House Museum dealing with building and collection conservation. Ongoing consultations.

LeRoy Historical Society

LeRoy, NY.  Multiple consultations as well as a building evaluation report funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation. In 2002, architects for the structural reinforcement of the “Academic” building (National Register listed as the “Union Free School”) which houses offices, collection, and the JELL-O museum.

North Star Historic Center

Hilton, New York.  A Technical Assistance Report in 2005, partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, included a general building evaluation and conservation recommendations for an old stone barn. The Town plans to convert this barn, which is adjacent to an old school house/history museum, into a museum of locally-used agricultural implements.

Oliver House

Penn Yan, NY. Client: Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society.  Building evaluation and recommendations for conservation in 1989.

Orleans County Genealogical Society

Albion, NY.  A Technical Assistance Report in 2005, partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, included a general building evaluation, conservation recommendations, and comments on adaptive reuse for the old New York Central Railroad Freight House in Albion. The Society plans to convert this building into a museum commemorating the Orphan Train Riders, abandoned and orphaned children sent from eastern port cities from 1854 to 1930 to be adopted by local families.

Pittsburgh Children’s Museum

Pittsburgh, PA.  Building evaluation and recommendations for conservation in 1993. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

Prouty-Chew House

Geneva, NY. Client: Geneva Historical Society.  Since 1990, multiple consultations including building evaluation, design of building conservation improvements, and study of accessibility improvements. Ongoing consultations.

Rochester Historical Society

Rochester, NY. Client: Rochester Historical Society.  Since 1983 multiple consultations including a Historic Structures Report for Woodside, a Greek Revival mansion which was the home of the Society. Restoration of the entry porch was completed in 2003. Woodside was sold to a private owner in 2008.

Rochester Museum and Science Center

Rochester, NY. Client: Rochester Museum and Science Center. Contact: Dr. George McIntosh, Director of Collections, (585) 271-4552 x 306. Evaluation of storage facilities, existing conditions, schematic design for renovation and reuse. The project was funded by a grant from The Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) and included collections conservation and climate-control consultants.

Rose Hill

Geneva, NY. Client: Geneva Historical Society.  This is a significant Greek Revival Mansion overlooking Seneca Lake. It is operated as a house museum. Bero Architecture completed an Historic Structure Report in 2002 and is providing on-going consultation regarding structural improvements. This building is a National Historic Landmark.

Seneca-Iroquois National Museum

Salamanca, NY. Seneca-Iroquois National Museum.  Building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 2001. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

Suffolk County Historical Society Museum

Riverhead, NY.  Building evaluation and recommendations for maintenance and care in 1992. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.

Susan B. Anthony House

Rochester, NY. Client: Susan B. Anthony House.  Since 1993, multiple consultations including building evaluation, design of Visitors Center, and climate monitoring and evaluation in conjunction with Richard Sherin, Director of Conservation at the Strong Museum. This building is a National Historic Landmark.

Terwilliger Museum

Waterloo, NY. Client: Waterloo Library and Historical Society.  Building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 2001. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation. An evaluation of the slate roofing was completed in 2003, construction drawings for replacement of the roofing were completed in 2005, and the project is currently being bid..

Union Block Reconstruction

Buffalo, NY.  In 2000, prior to proposed waterfront construction, archeological investigations revealed the original terminus of the Erie Canal in Buffalo and portions of the foundation for this block. The Erie Canal Heritage Waterfront Feasibility Study was commissioned to respond to the need to preserve the archaeological evidence and interpret the site in light of the findings. Bero Architecture, the historic architecture reconstruction consultant, designed a reconstruction of the Union Block based on historic documentation such as plat maps and early photographs. The basement was designed to display, in situ, the archaeological evidence; the first and second floors for interpretative displays and cultural artifacts, and the third floor, management offices.

Webster Museum & Historical Society

Webster, NY. Client: Webster Museum & Historical Society.  Building evaluation and conservation recommendations in 2001. This report was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation. In 2002, observed interior environmental conditions for a year and made recommendations for improving the environment for care of the collection.

Wyoming Village Hall Museum

Wyoming, NY. Client: Village of Wyoming.  Since 1987, multiple consultations including building evaluation and collections care consultation in conjunction with Ralph Wiegandt, objects conservator. The original report, in 1987, was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Conservation Assessment Program administered by Heritage Preservation.
