THE DESIGN PROCESS

At Bero Architecture, creating a design is a cooperative act between the client and the designer. There are multiple acceptable solutions to every design problem. Our process involves looking at alternatives to discover a design which best serves the needs of the client. Typically, we start with a program of the owner's needs and examine the existing site conditions. After understanding the programmatic and physical context, we sketch alternative solutions which will satisfy the program. We will meet to discuss the implications of these designs and get your ideas and suggestions for additional alternatives. After getting your comments on the sketches, we develop a schematic design which will be the master plan for your work. We do a more detailed estimate of probable construction costs based on the schematic design.

The process described above can be as brief as described, or it can require multiple iterations of sketch, meeting, comment, and revision; the number of revisions depends on the complexity of the design issues as well as the nature of the client. Bero Architecture is used to working with individuals as well as large and complex building committees.

The nature of many clients requires that we be good listeners. We have found committees to be very comfortable with the idea that a design cannot solve every problem and that no one committee member should dictate design solutions, but it is extremely important that every committee member be heard.

FEDERAL QUALIFICATIONS

In accordance with 36 CFR Part 61, projects which have state and federal support generally require consultants to meet professional qualifications standards. Bero Architecture has staff members which meet the standards for Architectural History, Architecture, and Historic Architecture.
